The Tigers are very much involved in local schools, primarily through the Learn to Play programme. Head Coach Tom Watkins, along with Tigers Academy Manager Rick Plant, visit schools in Telford, and beyond, on a weekly basis. Starting with assemblies during school hours, they then progress to after-school clubs, where children are shown the basic skills of ice hockey.
The intention of the Tigers Schools Programme is to show pupils how ice hockey can bring huge health and social benefits, as well as teamwork. Once youngsters show an interest in the game, they are then invited to the club’s Learn to Play sessions on Tuesday evenings.
Held at Telford Ice Rink, the sessions are intended to offer competent skaters a chance to sample the game. The club has six sets of full kit and 27 pairs of ice hockey skates, so there is no initial outlay for equipment.
